On Friday night in Montgomery, the 1-0 Summit Hilltoppers faced off against the 1-0 Montgomery Cougars. It was a hard-fought game but in the end it was the Hilltoppers winning 31 to 28.
After a quick three and out Summit looked to strike on defense. On Montgomery's first play on offense senior cornerback Connor Gawronski came up with an interception to give Summit the ball back. However, later Montgomery kicked off the scoring with a long touchdown drive to lead 7-0. After this Summit clawed their way back to score a touchdown by Alex Schwark on a 37-yard run. After this Montgomery quickly answered with a touchdown of their own making the score 14-7 ending the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter senior running back Daniel Licciardi brought Summit near the red zone on a pass from Alex Schwark. Then it was Schwark punching in the touchdown to tie the game. The Summit defense forced Montgomery to punt after a quick series. On offense Summit quickly got into the red zone thanks to a catch from senior wide receiver Kieran Zulauf. It was once again Alex Schwark scoring the touchdown to make the score 21-14 Summit. After Montgomery couldn't come up with a fourth down conversion thanks to cornerback Connor Gawornski, Summit had the ball with great field position. It was again Alex Schwark finding the hole for a touchdown and making the score 28-14. To start the second half Montgomery came out rolling, driving down the field to score a quick touchdown to cut the Summit lead to 28-21 Following this Summit drove down the field and ended up kicking a field goal from junior Jackson Marx to extend the score to 31-21 Montgomery didn't give up though they kept fighting and found themselves down by three with a little time left on the clock and a fourth-down situation. The Summit defense however was able to force the stop with a nice play from senior safety Jake Reimold who also led the team with 11 tackles. The Hilltoppers went into Morristown for their season opener and found themselves down 8-0 at halftime, but they managed to climb their way back to win their first game of the season, 14-11.
The first half of the game was a defensive battle. Late in the first quarter Morristown found their way into the endzone and with a two point conversion made it 8-0. Late in the second quarter Summit found themselves in the redzone thanks to a pass interference call. However, the drive came to end on the last play when Summit couldn’t finish the drive with points. Coming into the second half Summit was looking to find some momentum. After a disappointing first two drives, and with 17 minutes left in the game, it was senior quarterback Alex Schwark who led the way for the comeback. Schwark ran 43 yards to put the Hilltoppers on the board and swung the momentum to to the Hilltoppers side. After a stop from the Summit defense, the offense came back on the field, where sophomore running back Cooper Smoragiewicz started the drive with a 13-yard first-down rush. Immediately following that play, it was Schwark scoring another touchdown, this time from 46 yards out, to put the Hilltoppers in front. Summit looked to put the game away with a stop on defense. On a second down play with about ten minutes left, Morristown's quarterback threw up a pass which was broken up by safety Jake Reimold to make it third down and long. Senior defensive end Aiden Ewing came up with a huge sack on third down the following play, forcing the Colonials to punt. After this possession Morristown could not get another drive together putting the game to an end. Senior captain Anthony Trujillo said after the game, “All I can say is that I’m extremely proud of and excited for this team's future. Friday night was all about defining who we are as a group and we showed that we have the grit and toughness that can take us as far as we want?” Linebackers Daniel Licciardi and Matt McKeever contributed to the defensive battle.
