The Hilltoppers went into Morristown for their season opener and found themselves down 8-0 at halftime, but they managed to climb their way back to win their first game of the season, 14-11.
The first half of the game was a defensive battle. Late in the first quarter Morristown found their way into the endzone and with a two point conversion made it 8-0. Late in the second quarter Summit found themselves in the redzone thanks to a pass interference call. However, the drive came to end on the last play when Summit couldn’t finish the drive with points. Coming into the second half Summit was looking to find some momentum. After a disappointing first two drives, and with 17 minutes left in the game, it was senior quarterback Alex Schwark who led the way for the comeback. Schwark ran 43 yards to put the Hilltoppers on the board and swung the momentum to to the Hilltoppers side. After a stop from the Summit defense, the offense came back on the field, where sophomore running back Cooper Smoragiewicz started the drive with a 13-yard first-down rush. Immediately following that play, it was Schwark scoring another touchdown, this time from 46 yards out, to put the Hilltoppers in front. Summit looked to put the game away with a stop on defense. On a second down play with about ten minutes left, Morristown's quarterback threw up a pass which was broken up by safety Jake Reimold to make it third down and long. Senior defensive end Aiden Ewing came up with a huge sack on third down the following play, forcing the Colonials to punt. After this possession Morristown could not get another drive together putting the game to an end. Senior captain Anthony Trujillo said after the game, “All I can say is that I’m extremely proud of and excited for this team's future. Friday night was all about defining who we are as a group and we showed that we have the grit and toughness that can take us as far as we want?” Linebackers Daniel Licciardi and Matt McKeever contributed to the defensive battle. Each had a team leading eight tackles. Summit now looks to bring their week one momentum into Montgomery on Friday at 7:00pm -Cam Aronson, Summit HS Class of 2028
